Foster + Partners designs robot-built 3D-printed Mars shelter
How would you go about building housing on another planet? As you might guess, every pound you try to fly out of the earth’s atmosphere is a serious penalty to the amount of range or the amount of fuel you’d need to carry.
Which is why Foster + Partners proposes that printing buildings with semiautonomous robots is the way to go if/when we decide to have manned missions to the red planet.
The robots would use the available materials on the planet (dirt and rocks) to cut down on the amount of building materials needed to transport to space and the robots could begin construction before humans actually set foot on the planet.
How’s that for a welcome?
